EN ISO 17100 is the European standard dealing specifically with translation services, covering the core translation process and all other significant activities involved in drawing up the offer and providing the service. This quality standard also sets out the requirements for a translation service provider with regard to human and technical resources, quality and project management, the contractual framework, and service procedures.

European standard ISO 18587 instead deals with the Machine Translation + Post-Editing process, which involves an initial translation stage performed with Machine Translation (or MT) engines, followed by Post-Editing (or Revision), a crucial stage handled by professional translators.

Technical information on standard EN ISO 17100

Standard EN 17100, approved by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) on 13 April 2006, was officially published in May 2006.
In compliance with CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of the following countries are required to implement this European standard: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.
The standard defines the translation process, the characteristics and the role of the translator and of all those involved in the translation process: reviewers, revisers and proofreaders.
All translation services performed to standard EN ISO 17100 must include both translation and revision, at the very least.
The former is carried out by the actual translator, whose skills must be adequate to the task, and includes a final check of their own work.
The latter, namely revision, also known as bilingual editing, must then be carried out by a person other than the translator. As stated in the standard, it consists in the examination of target language content against source language content to check its suitability for the agreed purpose and, where necessary, recommending corrective actions.
To be qualified, translators who are part of translation projects that comply with standard EN ISO 17100 must meet at least one of the following requirements: a recognized graduate qualification in translation from an institution of higher education; an equivalent qualification in any other field plus at least two years of documented experience in translating; no less than five years of documented professional experience in translating.
In addition to meeting one of the three requirements above, revisers must have expertise in translation of the subject matter in question.
Standard EN 17100 standard also covers review and proofreading, as well as any other value-added services, such as certification (sworn translations), the creation and management of glossaries and terminology databases, page layout services (DTP), etc.
